Abstract

1516354 Polyvinyl chloride/fabric laminates DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 17 July 1975 [17 July 1974] 30123/75 Heading B5N A composite structure used in protecting surfaces, e.g. in mining and tunnelling, comprises two soft polyvinyl chloride films of different composition laid one on top of the other and united together, the films being bonded in turn to an open weave fabric or non-woven mesh fabric formed by laying of filaments across each other to form, an open network and bonding the filaments together at their points of intersection, the junction points of filaments forming the fabric being sufficiently weak to allow slipping or distortion of filament interconnections. When the fabric is subjected to a load so that the load is taken up elastically without rupture ofthe filaments or destruction of the interconnection. The composite structure may be produced by applying a first soft polyvinyl chloride plastisol to a continuous support at ambient temperature heating to a temperature of 160- -200 C. to gel partially the first plastisol, applying thereto a layer of a second soft polyvinyl chloride plastisol of different composition to the first plastisol laying the fabric on the second plastisol while it remains ungelled, heating to a temperature of 160-250 C. to gel the plastisol layers and removing the composite structure from the support. The fabric and polyvinyl chloride layer may be bonded together by adhesive. The fabric may be produced from glass, polyester, polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene or polycarbonate filaments. The fabric may be pretreated with an amino silane, vinylsilane or polyvinyl propionate. The woven fabric may have a linen weave or may be a gauze or twill. In the case of a non-woven material the filaments may be bonded by welding or adhesive bonding. The outer polyvinyl chloride layer may contain stabilizers and may have a low filler content, e.g. up to 5% by weight and the intermediate polyvinyl chloride layer may have a relatively e.g. 50-60% by weight, a suitable filler being chalk. The soft polyvinyl chloride may contain 30-50% by weight of plasticizer. A fabricfree zone may be provided along the marginal regions of the composite structure to facilitate bonding to adjacent strips when covering a surface.
