Abstract
1516412 Tubular casing UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 27221/75 Heading A2B Apparatus for maintaining a difference in inflation gas pressure between two interior zones of a flexible film tube (e.g. collagum sausage casing) which is advanced from one zone to the other comprises a base roll having a smooth circumferential surface and first and second nip rolls spaced apart for pressing the tubing against the base roll, the nip rolls being movable relative to the base roll, thus forming a succession of gas chambers of variable volume in the advancing tubing. The casing 19 passes from a dryer 11 to a pressure regulating station 13, a metering roll assembly 15 to a shirring station 17. The pressure in the dryer may be low but at the pressure regulating station 13 it is high. In order to allow air to pass from the inflation head 29 one of the metering rolls 49-51 is provided with a circumferential groove 59. The pressure regulating station 13 comprises a base roll 31 which effects contact with the casing and nip rolls 33 and 35 which are so mounted as to permit the nip contact to be varied, being mounted in yokes actuated by air pressure.
