Abstract
1517308 Anodes for electrowinning; electrodeposition INCO Ltd 29 Oct 1975 [4 Nov 1974] 44519/75 Heading C7B An insoluble anode for electrowinning Ni, Cu, Co or Zn from an aqueous solution, e.g. containing 40 to 60 g/l Ni ions, 42 g/l H 2 SO 4 , 10 (or 5) g/l H 3 BO 3 and 3 to 5 g/l Mg ions, comprises a substrate of Ti, Zr, Ta or alloy thereof coated successively with a flash layer, e.g. 0.01 to 1 micron thick, of a Pt group metal (preferably Pt, Pd, Ru or Rh) or alloy thereof, an adherent PbO 2 layer and an adherent MnO 2 layer, e.g. respectively 50 to 2000 and 10 to 1000 microns thick. The successive coatings are preferably electro-deposited: e.g. Pt from a bath containing 5 g/l Pt as H 2 Pt(NO 2 ) 2 SO 4 dissolved in aqueous H 2 SO 4 using a Pt anode; PbO 2 from an aqueous bath containing 100 to 300 g/l Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , 20 to 200 ml/l concentrated nitric acid and 10 mg/l polypropyleneglycol methyl ether wetting agent using a stainless steel cathode; and MnO 2 from an aqueous bath containing 100 to 150 g/l MnSO 4 .H 2 O and 10 to 30 g/l H 2 SO 4 (or Mn(NO 3 ) 2 and HNO 3 ) using a Pb alloy cathode. Alternatively the MnO 2 layer may be deposited by repeated thermal decomposition of Mn(NO 3 ) 2 at 190C, and can be renewed for reconditioning the anode. The substrate may be in bulk, e.g. in the form of rods, sheet, foraminous structures such as expanded metal or porous sintered compacts of metal powder; or as a layer, coating or sheath on another material e.g. Cu. The substrate e.g. Ti mesh may be sand blasted, treated with detergent comprising complex organic phosphates and sulphonates, degreased with acetone and dipped in boiling concentrated HCl prior to electrodeposition.
