Abstract

1517501 Mounting internal combustion engines J B MEIKLE 25 June 1975 [26 March 1974 13 Aug 1974] 13249/74 and 35585/74 Heading F1M [Also in Division F2] An engine, in particular a marine diesel engine 10, is supported on a surface, in particular the engine room deck 14 of a ship, by raising it to the desired level by a number of jacks (not shown) and then positioning a number of cast iron or steel blocks 16 between the engine bed-plate 12 and the deck 14 while the engine 10 is maintained in its raised position, each block being supported on steel wedges (not shown) to form a free space of between 0À1 and 10 mm between the lower surface of each block 16 and the deck 14. A thermosetting ream 20, e.g. epoxy resin, is supplied under pressure from an apparatus 22 through a flexible pipe 52 and a bore 18 in each block 16 to form a layer 24 of the resin in the free space beneath the block, after which the nozzle 54 of the pipe 52 is removed from the bore 18 and is replaced by a cone-shaped bung 64. The layers 24 of the epoxy resin 20 are then allowed to cure and harden, after which the steel wedges and the jacks (not shown) are removed. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the resin is injected into a free space between the upper surface of the block 16 and the engine bed-plate 12. The nozzle 54 at the end of the flexible pipe 51 may in either case by replaced by a hypodermic needle type of outlet and the resin injected directly into the free space.
