Abstract
1517842 Decompression apparatus to facilitate IC engine starting BERNARD-MOTEURS 7 Jan 1976 [17 Jan 1975] 00543/76 Headings F1B and F1K [ Also in Division F2] Decompression apparatus for facilitating the starting of an I.C. engine comprises a cam-shaft 1 having a bore 2 in which a piston 8 is movable by hydraulic pressure, e.g. engine lubricating oil pressure, against the action of spring 6, to move an end 13 of a lever 11 so that end 12 of the lever, which forms a retractable protrusion from the camshaft, is moved from its protruding to its retracted position. When in its protruding position before engine oil pressure has risen sufficiently on starting, the end 12 acts to open an engine valve e.g. an exhaust valve at the beginning of the compression stroke. By means of the modifications shown in dashed lines’in Fig. 2 and in Fig. 3 (not shown) the apparatus can function as an oil pressure relief valve. Fig. 2 shows the normal operating position, but if the oil pressure exceeds a set value, pistons 5 and 8 move further to the right so that oil can escape via a groove 20 and passage 3, the end 12 of the lever then entering a depression 19.
