Abstract
1517870 Image encoding apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 20 Dec 1976 53036/76 Heading H4P Graphics on a document 1 are raster scanned by a scanner 2 and the resulting bit pattern on line 3 is processed at 4 to provide a bit pattern representing lines having a width of a single pel (i.e. picture element) indicative of the shapes, i.e. the outlines or the centre lines, of the scanned graphics. A line follower 6 examines successively each bit position in the processed bit pattern to determine whether it represents a pel and, if so, whether the detected pel is contiguous with a previously detected pel either on the same scan line or the preceding scan line; contiguous pels are also examined to determine whether they fulfil a predetermined linearity condition, and if so a coded representation in the form of a vector having a start address and an end address is produced by the line follower 6 and passed along line 7 to a vector store 8. Whenever contiguous pels do not fulfil the required linearity condition, the vector being tracked is terminated and a new vector is started. The resulting vector bit in store 8 can be accessed, e.g. by a sub-system controller 10, and then displayed in any convenient manner, e.g. vectors longer than a predetermined threshold can be displayed on a graphic display 11 and vectors shorter than this on an alphanumeric display 12, the assumption being that long vectors are probably graphical in nature whilst short vectors probably constitute alphanumeric characters. Operation of keyboards 13, 14 allows displayed «documents» to be corrected edited, etc. Suitable apparatus for generating the vectors and details of the scanning, pel-stripping and linearity-determining processes are described with reference to Figs. 2 to 27 (not shown).
