Abstract

1522407 Fuel reactor for IC engine NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 25 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 21607/76 Heading F1B [Also in Division C4-5] A fuel reactor for forming a gaseous fuel, containing at least one of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, from at least one fuel selected from hydrocarbon fuels, alcohols and nitrogen-hydrogen compounds comprises a reaction chamber in the form of a combustion chamber 40 of a compression ignition I.C. engine 10, a piston 38 adapted to compress a gas in the combustion chamber at a compression ratio in the range from 14 to 20, a fuel feed means for supplying a gaseous reactant containing said fuel to the reaction chamber and a heat exchanger 30 for transferring heat to at least one component of the reactant to be supplied to the reaction chamber either from the reaction product discharged from the reaction chamber or from the exhaust gas of a combustion engine to which the reaction product from the reaction chamber is fed. In Fig. 1, air is heated in heat exchanger 30 and passed via line 18 to a heat exchanger 32 where it heats fuel being supplied with the air to a mixing device 16 before being supplied to combustion chamber 40 of cylinder 12 of the engine 10. The heat exchanger may instead be between the mixing device 16 and the cylinder 12. The reaction product from cylinder 12 is passed through heat exchanger 30 then mixed with air before being supplied to cylinders 14 of the engine 10 for complete combustion. The air-fuel ratio of the mixture supplied to the cylinder 12 is between 5À0 and 5À5. As shown in Fig. 2 fuel may be supplied by way of a line 20A and pump 56 to an injector 54 during start-up of the engine, a valve 52 being closed at this time. Water or steam may be supplied to the mixing device 16 via a line 58. In Fig. 3 (not shown) an auxiliary combustion chamber (140) is provided with a heater (143) for use during start-up.
