Abstract

1522693 Acoustic waveguides WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 5 Aug 1975 [12 Aug 1974] 32705/75 Heading H3U A waveguide for elastic waves comprises a core 12, which may be solid or liquid, surrounded by a cladding member 13 of circular cross-section which has a higher wave velocity and is of a thickness such that the particle displacement decreases to substantially zero within member 13. Torsional, radial or longitudinal waves may be employed. The waveguide may be mounted in a cushioning medium 18. The core and cladding may be separated by wedge-shaped members 31, Fig. 11, with the intervening space being evacuated. The core and cladding may be of the same material, e.g. silica, with doping being used to provide the desired velocity difference; the doping may vary gradually with radial distance. The waveguide may have enlarged ends (Fig. 8 not shown) and may be coiled (Fig. 10 not shown). The transducers 19, 20 may be of lead zirconate titanate. To generate radial waves a radially polarised disc Fig. 5, (not shown) has driving electrodes on its main surfaces; alternatively an orthogonally polarised disc may be radially driven. A circularly polarised disc, Fig. 7 (not shown) with driving electrodes on its main surfaces may be used to generate torsional waves. A square X-cut lithium niobate plate 36 with oppositely disposed sectored electrode pairs 37-40 may be used to generate either radial or torsional waves depending on the orientation of the crystallographic axes with respect to the electrodes.
