Abstract
1525258 Wells &c MC EVOY OIL FIELD EQUIPMENT CO 30 Sept 1975 39911/75 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] First and second tubular connectors 20, 22 which are welded to pipes 12, 14 forming part of an undersea string, are provided with cooperating groups of circumferentially spaced no-lead threads which may be interengaged to hold the connectors 20, 22 together, the connector 20 having stop lugs 32 formed thereon as a castellated end thereof, and static rotation of the connectors during engagement being limited by a stop 46 on the connector 22, an axially movable latch 50 also being provided on the connector 22 engageable with a lug 32 to prevent disengagement of the connectors, the latch 50 (Figure 4) being normally held engaged by a shear pin 86 but being releasable to allow disengagement of the connectors 20, 22 by means of a release tool having an actuating ring 54, the tool being dropped down inside the pipes either freely or on a wire, and the ring 54 striking a radially extending bar 74 engaging a bevelled surface on the latch 50 so as to shear the pin 86 and move the latch 50 downwardly in Figure 4 allowing relative rotation and release of the connectors 20, 22. Flattening of a plug 78 of soft material against a shoulder 44 within the connector 20 will indicate whether the ring 54 has released the latch 50 on retrieval. As an alternative to the movable latch 50, the latch may be formed so as to have a part thereof break off under the action of the bar 74 to release the connectors for disengagement, this part being formed as the end of an elongate member or as a chordal part of a disc.
