Abstract
1525335 Aligning liquid crystals V S BANNIKOV M K BERESTENKO V A BYKOV I V MYAGKOV and P S SOTNIKOV 3 Feb 1976 04215/76 Heading G2F A method of forming a homogeneously oriented layer of nematic liquid crystal between a pair of spaced plates comprises (i) forming a monomolecular layer of a surfactant at a liquid/gas interface, with all the long axes of the essentially linear molecules parallel, and with the molecules packed as close as possible under the influence of a low order mechanical force, the surfactant being a water-insoluble compound of the Formula: in which R is C n H (2n + 2k-m-1) Hal m , n is an integer from 12 to 37 subject to the proviso below, m is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to (2 n + 2 k -1), k is greater than or equal to -3 and less than or equal to 1, Hal is F, Cl, or Br, X is =CH 2 , =C=O, =O, =S, -CH=CH-, or =C=CH 2 , b is an integer from 0 to 5, and Y is -OH, -CO 2 H, -SO 3 H, -PO 3 H 2 , provided that n is at least 18 when Y is -SO 3 H, -PO 3 H 2 or -Si(OCH 3 ) 3 , or a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol or derivative thereof of the Formula: in which 20y # x # 1000, and Z is -H, -COCH 3 , -COCF 3 , or -CH 2 -CH=CH 2 (ii) passing a pair of spaced plates through the interface from the liquid phase to the gas phase so that the packed layer of surfactant is transferred to the surfaces of the plates, (iii) heating the coated plates at a temperature of from 80 to 180‹C, and (iv) introducing a nematic liquid crystal into the space between the plates. The surfactant layers formed on the plates may be subjected to ultraviolet irradiation to effect cross linking.
