Abstract

1525508 Hydrodesulphurization of heavy oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 22 Dec 1975 [21 Feb 1975] 52343/75 Heading CSE Hydrocarbon oil consisting of either a deasphalted oil or a deasphalted oil in admixture with a distitllate is hydrodesulphurized at a hydrogen partial pressure below 90 bar and a water vapour partial pressure of 0À1-10 bar in the presence of a catalyst which contains nickel and/or cobalt together with molybdenum and/or tungsten supported on a carrier such as alumina or silicaalumina. The water vapour can be provided by the addition of water, steam or a precursor such as an alcohol. The deasphalted oil can be produced by deasphalting a long or short residue, a crude oil or a residue obtained in the distillation of products of the catalytic or thermal cracking of a heavy oil; a suitable feed oil can be prepared by separating a long residue into a distillate and a short residue by distillation at reduced pressure, deasphalting the short residue and mixing the distillate with the deasphalted oil. The desulphurized product can be catalytically or thermally cracked to produce gasoline or kerosine or can be blended with distillate or residual components, such as the asphalt removed from the heavy oil prior to the hydrodesulphurization, to produce a fuel oil.
