Abstract

1529235 Transistor amplifiers RCA CORPORATION 13 Jan 1976 [16 Jan 1975] 01186/76 Heading H3T A transistor amplifier comprises similar gain bipolar transistors 1′, 2′ of the same conductivity type arranged for operation at substantially the same temperature, and forming an emitter coupled pair, a signal input terminal 5′ connected to the base of 11, D.C. connections between the respective collectors and a supply terminal, at least one connection including a load, and an inverting current amplifier 7′ having a low impedance input 21′ connected to the base of 2′ and an output 22′ connected to the base of 1′, whereby the base current of 11 is a multiple of the base current of 21. It is shown mathematically in the specification that the collector currents of 11 and 21 are determined by the sum of their emitter currents, and the current gain of 7′. Current amplifier 7′ is a current mirror the gain of which is given by the ratio of the base-emitter junction areas of transistors 25′ and 24′, which is substantially independent of temperature. An FET 45 increases the output impedance of 7′, and a further FET 44 is included to match the collector circuits of 24′ and 25′. A source-follower FET 48 is arranged to feed base current to 24′ and 251. A second current mirror 571, similar to 71, is used to couple the collectors of 11 and 21 to output terminal 121. In an alternative arrangement (not illustrated) the emitters of 11 and/or 21 may be resistively linked to node 131, and transistor 36 may be replaced by a pair of transistors having their collectors connected to the respective emitters of 11 and 21. Furthermore 11 and 21 may be replaced by compound transistors.
