Abstract

Awnings, special applications of. – Relates to side folding covers for boats and comprises a cover and supports therefor which, when folded, lie in a housing sunk in the deck. According to the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the cover s is carried by longitudinal bars e<1>, m<1> mounted on arms e, m with or without an intermediate bar r<1> and arm r. Sets of arms c. m, r are arranged at the front and rear of the cover, and in the case of long covers, intermediate sets may be provided. The arm e is carried by a member d pivotally mounted at c between a pair of transverse plates a, sunk in the deck, the member d being connected by a link f to a block i which slides on tubular guides j and carries the pivoted arm m. The arm r is pivoted between the plates a at q. When the cover is lowered the arms e, r, m occupy the space between the plates a and the bars e<1>, r<1>, m<1> fold down into a side housing o which is provided with a lid p<1>. The housing o may form a seat. The weight of the cover is balanced by springs arranged in the tubes j and bearing against the sliding block i, or by cords connected to the block i and to a tension spring, or by means of weights. When the invention is applied to a boat, the housing o may be sunk in the deck or might form a seat in the deck. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the lower ends of the arms e, m are mounted on right and left handed screwed spindles, the spindles operating the different sets of arms being geared together so that the hood when raised may be drawn taut by turning a single handle. The cover is secured to the boat by straps t, and may have detachable side curtains and end flaps. According to the Provisional Specification, the arms e, m may be adjustable in length.
