Abstract
In the apparatus, preparations are applied by means of nozzles (1) to material webs made of cellulose and polyester fibres and their mixtures. The nozzles (1) are arranged in a housing (5) above a conveyor device (6) for the material web (2) and are directed onto the latter. In order to achieve a uniformly thick application of the preparation, the apparatus contains a device for generating a circulating air flow, which consists of a blower (3) and of guide plates and which is arranged in such a way that the air flow passes the material web (2) in the direction of the nozzle jets.
Description
(54) APPARATUS AND PROCESS FOR THE APPLICATION OF
PREPARATIONS ONTO SHEET MATERIALS
(71) We, HOECHST AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, a body corporate organised according to the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, of 6230 Frankfurt/Main 80, Postfach 80 03 20,
Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to apparatus for the application of preparations (normally liquids) onto sheet materials and to a process therefor.
In previously proposed processes, for example, as disclosed in U.S. Specification
No. 3,973,902, preparations are applied to webs of fabrics as uniformly as possible by spraying a fine dispersion of the preparation.
One disadvantage of this process however, is that the cloud of droplets forming the spray can be disturbed by relatively weak ambient air currents and so be deflected from the intended path as determined by the spraying characteristic of the nozzles. This leads to the preparation being applied in a thick nonuniform layer. One method of overcoming this drawback is disclosed in German Offenlegungsschrift 2,406,831, which describes a process in which the droplets are drawn onto the web by electrostatic forces in an electric field. The use of strong electric fields, however, requires special safety measures and is not possible at all when inflammable liquids are to be applied.
The present invention provides apparatus for applying a preparation to a sheet material, which comprises a housing containing means for spraying the preparation onto the sheet material, means for transporting the sheet material past the spraying means, and means for generating a current of gas to guide onto the sheet material the preparation emitted by the spraying means, and in which there is provided means for recirculating the gas so that, in operation, the gas passes through and/or round the sheet material and is then recirculated.
By means of apparatus according to the invention, the sprayed droplets can be reliably guided onto the sheet material and the preparation can be uniformly applied, irrespective of any fluctuating currents of the surrounding atmosphere.
The spraying means, which may be situated above the path followed by the sheet material will generally comprise one or more nozzles, preferably a plurality of nozzles, arranged to direct the preparation towards the sheet material. The plurality of nozzles may be disposed transversely in relation to the direction of movement of the sheet material and, in a preferred form of the apparatus, the nozzles are arranged in a series of rows, each row extending transversely in relation to the direction of movement of the sheet material.
In order to reduce the turbulance of the gas current, means for distributing the flow of gas may be provided in the housing, behind the spraying means as viewed from the transport means. A laminar flow of gas is especially suitable for guiding the preparation.
There may be provided one or more filters for filtering the gas, preferably, arranged to filter the gas after its passage through and/or round the sheet material.
The invention further provides a process for applying a preparation to a sheet material (preferably continuously) which comprises spraying the preparation onto the sheet material in apparatus according to the invention. The gas will usually comprise air and the sheet material is generally a fabric, especially one which comprises cellulose and/ or polyester fibre. In this case, the preparation may comprise an alkali or solution thereof and/or a carrier
Two forms of apparatus according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the first form of apparatus;
Figure 2 is a top view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front view of the apparatus
of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a side view of the second form
of apparatus; and
Figure 5 is a top view of the apparatus
shown in Figure 4.
Referring to each form of apparatus shown
in the accompanying drawings, a housing
shown generally by the reference numeral 5
contains transport means 6 for a sheet or web
2. Nozzles 1 are mounted above the web and
below the web there is a filter 4 for the
circulating air. The circulating air is kept in
motion by blowers 3. In the housing 5 there
are partitioned ducts 8 in which the blowers 3
are separated from the transport means by
partitions 7. In order to improve the guiding
effect of the air current a laminar flow of air
can be produced by an air distributor 9,
mounted in the housing 5 above the nozzles 1.
Where especially dense applications of
preparation are desired, several rows of
nozzles can be arranged one behind the
other in the direction of motion of the web,
the nozzles in each row being directed at an
angle with respect to those in the or each
other row. In such an arrangement, for
example, the second form of apparatus
shown in Figures 4 and 5, the nozzles can be
operated parallel to one another without
mutual interference.
