Description

PATENT SPECIFICATION
( 21) Application No 27607/77 ( 22) Filed 1 Jull ( 31) Convention Application No.
75283 ( 32) Filed ( 33) Luxembourg (LU) ( 44) Complete Specification published 11 June 1980 ( 51) INT CL 3 EO O B 7102 ( 52) Index at acceptance E 1 G AA ( 11) y 1977 1 July 1976 in (» ( 54) IMPROVEMENTS TO RAILWAY SWITCHING POINTS ( 71) We GESTIVALMO SOCIETE A No NYME HOLDING, a joint stock company organised under the laws of Luxemburg, of 22 Boulevard Royal, Luxemburg, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to improvements in railway switching points.
It is known to effect splitting of lines of railway rails by operating moving rails, called «tongue-rails» or «switch rails», which may be selectively brought into contact with the adjacent rails called «main rails» or «running rails» and separated therefrom by a sliding movement of the tongue-rails over bearings or slide plates, supported by sleepers or ties.
The control of the movement of the tongue-rails is accomplished either on the spot by means of counterweighted levers or from a distance by mechanical and/or electrical means.
In order to secure an adequate movement of the tongue-rails of the switching points under all atmospheric conditions, the bearings or bearing plates must be frequently lubricated Thus a large workforce is required in railway systems to maintain a constant sufficient lubrication of the bearings or slide plates of the numerous switching points which such railway systems comprise.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a railway track switching point in which the movement of the tongue-rails with respect to the main rails does not take place in contact with the bearings or slide Plates of the switching point, so that the bearings or slide plates need no lubrication.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of the type mentioned in the above paragraph, which may be put in place between two sleepers of a railway line, at the point where a switch is provided, or on the sleepers themselves, beside existing bearings, whereby it is not 50 necessary to dismantle the switching point or any part of the existing line, so that the said putting in place may be achieved without interrupting the traffic on the line in question 55 According to the invention there is provided a railway track switching point comprising two movable tongue-rails controlled in such a manner that their ends may be brought in contact with line-rails or be 60 separated therefrom by a sliding movement over bearings carried by sleepers, the said switching point comprising at least one support device which is placed in the space between two adjacent bearings and 65 comprises a slide element supporting at least one tongue-rail by means of a slide surface having a low coefficient of friction, as herein defined, the said element being urged by resilient means to lift the tongue 70 rail or rails which it supports with respect to the bearings in such a manner that the tongue-rail or rails are not in contact with the bearings during the sliding movement of the tongue-rail or rails but come direct 75 ly into contact with the bearings under the influence of the load of a railway vehicle passing over the tongue-rail or rails.
The term «surface having a low coefficient of friction», as used herein means 80 a surface whose said coefficient is sufficiently low as to render the use of lubricant thereon unnecessary.
The resilient means lifting the tonguerail or rails may consist of springs, for ex 85 ample plate-springs, coil-springs, dish springs or disc springs, or of pneumatic or hydraulic devices.
The slide element of the device according to the invention is advantageously made 90 00 00 1 568 878 ( 1 1 568 878 of a plastics material having as low a friction coefficient as possible such as, for example a thermoplastic material, such as a polyamide, a polyacetal, a polyethylene or polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene fluoride, a polycarbonate, a polystyrene, an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer, cellulose acetate or polymethylmethacrylate, a thermosetting material, such as a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a cresol-formaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin, or a polyester, an elastomer such as a polyurethane, or a composite material, such as mixtures of a polyacetal and polytetrafluoroethylene Another material of which the slide element may be made is porous bronze.
The slide element is advantageously fixed to a support, preferably a metal support.
Thus, this slide element may be in the form of a plate stuck or fixed in another manner to the support, or in the form of a shaped piece gripping round at least a part of the support.
The slide element may have a series of grooves extending preferably obliquely from the one edge to the other edge thereof.
In one embodiment of the device according to the invention, the support of the slide element is carried by at least one spring bearing upon a seating intended to be fixed to at least one of the line-rails of the switching point or on the sleepers themselves, beside the existing bearings.
In another embodiment of the invention, the support of the element consists of a spring or itself forms a part of a spring and constitutes, for example, one of the legs of a spring having substantially a Ushape and lying on its other leg, the said other leg being supported by the abovementioned base-plate or seating.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a partial diagrammatic top view of a switching point of a railway line; Figure 2 is a side view in vertical section showing a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 3 is a side view in vertical section showing a second embodiment of the invention; Figure 4 is a section according to line III-111 of figure 3; Figure 5 is a top view of a third embodiment of the invention; Figure 6 is a side view in vertical section in the direction of the arrowhead Y on figure 5; Figure 7 is a vertical section along the line VII-VII in figure 5; and Figures 8 and 9 show, in perspective, respectively from the top and from the bottom, one embodiment of a slide element.
Figure 1 shows a part of a switching point 1 which comprises a fixed rail 2 forming one of the line-rails or running-rails of 70 the switching point, the line-rail being fixed to sleepers 3 A tongue-rail or needle 4 may be caused to slide on bearings or sliding plates 5 supported by the sleepers 3, in such a way that the point or blade of the tongue 75 rail 4 is brought into contact with the linerail 2 or separated therefrom, the switching point being operated by known control means (not shown).
Devices 7 are placed between or on the 80 sleepers 3 supporting the bearings 5, in such a manner that there is never any contact between the devices 7 and bearings 5.
The devices 7 may therefore be put in place without necessitating dismantling of the 85 switching point and therefore interrupting the railway traffic.
In a first embodiment of the invention, shown in Figure 2, the tongue-rail 4 rests on a slide element 8 having a self lubricat 90 ing surface The element 8 is supported by a leg 9 of a spring blade 10 having the shape of a U and lying on its other leg 11 The leg 11 is fixed by means of bolts 12 to a base-plate 13 which is itself fixed to the 95 heel 14 of the line-rail 2 by means of pieces 15 and 16, integral with a base-plate 13.
The tongue-rail 4 is somewhat lifted with respect to the line-rail 2, owing to the U 100 shaped spring 10, so that the tongue-rail is not in contact with the slide plates or bearings 5 carried by the sleepers 3 Thus, when the switching point 4 is moved in the direction indicated by the arrowheads 105 X, it slides over the upper surface 17 of the slide element 8, without being in contact with the bearings 5.
The slide element 8 may comprise, for instance, of a sleeve or sheath of plastics 110 material, for instance of polytetrafluoroethylene and/or of polyacetal, gripping round the upper leg 9 of the spring 10, whereby the surface 17 of the piece 8 has a very low friction coefficient such that it 115 does not require lubrication.
As long as no railway vehicle passes over the switching point, the tongue-rails 4 thereof are maintained lifted by a few millimeters owing to the springs 10 How 120 ever, under the influence of the ‘weight of a railway vehicle passing over the switching point, the tongue-rails 4 thereof are lowered against the action of the springs until the tongue-rails come into con 125 tact with the existing bearings which then support the entire load of the railway vehicle, thereby neutralizing the action of the springs 10.
In the second embodiment of the inven 130 1 568 878 tion shown in Figures 3 and 4, the tonguerail is supported by a slide element 8 made of plastics material having a low coefficient of friction, the cross-section of which, (similar to that of the slide element shown in Figure 2) is shown in figure 4 The slide element shown in Figures 3 and is pulled over a steel support plate 19 Disc-type springs 20 provide resilient support for the plate 19 and the slide element 8 carried by the plate 19.
The disc-springs 20 bear upon upper washers 21 and lower washers 22, and rods 23, fixed to the plate 19, act as guides for the springs 20 The rods 23 pass through a base-plate 24, a screw-nut 25 and a counternut 26, screwed on the threaded end 27 of the rods 23, a washer 28 being placed between the screw-nut 25 and the inner face of the base-plate 24.
The base-plate 24 has a first projection 29 in the form of a clamp which grips the edge of the heel 14 of the line-rail 2 A second projection 30 of the base-plate 24 in which a threaded rod 31 is received is used to fix the base-plate 24 to the other side of the heel 14 of the line-rail 2 The projection 30 is covered with a stirrup 32 which is pressed against the heel 14 by means of a nut 33 screwed on the threaded rod 31.
The downward movement of the tonguerail 4, in opposition to the action of the disc-springs 20, is limited by the upper surface of the existing slide-bearings.
As in the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the device shown in Figures 3 and 4 which is spaced from the bearings 5, maintains the tongue-rail 4 lifted by means of the springs 20, as long as the tongue-rail is not lowered under the influence of the weight of a vehicle, so that the sideways movement of the tongue-rail 4 is carried out only in contact with the surface of the slide element However, when a railway vehicle passes over the tongue-rail 4, the load thereof in not supported by the slide element 8 and by the springs 20, but by the bearings 5.
In a third embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, the device is placed on a sleeper 3, beside a steel bearing or slide plate 5 In this third embodiment the tongue-rail 4 rests upon a slide element 8 made of self lubricating plastics material and carried by two spring plates 34 and 34 ‘ which are fixed at their extremities by means of a screw 35 to a raised part 36 of a seating 37 The seating 37 is fixed by means of a sleeper-screw 38 to the sleeper 3 The bearing 5 applied to a base-plate 39, and the seating 37 are located beside each other on one and the same sleeper 3.
As appears in Figure 6, the spring plates 34, 34 ‘ extend in overhanging fashion from their extremities fixed to the seating 37, so that the tongue-rail 4, supported by the sliding piece 8, is lifted with respect to the upper surface 38 of the bearing 5 as 70 long as the tongue-rail is not subjected to the load of a railway vehicle The sliding of the tongue-rail 4 tending to bring it nearer to or to remove it from the linerail 2 takes only place over the slide ele 75 ment 8, thereby avoiding any contact between the tongue-rail 4 and the bearing 5.
However, when a railway vehicle passes over the tongue-rail 4, the latter is lowered until it comes in contact with the bearing 80 5, which thus takes over the entire load of the vehicle.
Figures 8 and 9 show a slide element 8 having a surface 17 which has a low coefficient of friction and is provided with a 85 series of grooves 40 extending obliquely from one side edge 41 to the other side edge 42 thereof These grooves 40 act to collect dust which may be deposited on the surface 17 When the tongue-rail 4 slides 90 over the surface 17, the dust is pushed into the grooves 40 and, when the dust has gathered therein, it is evacuated through the open ends 43 of these grooves Thus the surface 17 is kept clean and remains 95 smooth, allowing easy sliding of the tonguerail 4.
As can be seen in Figure 9, the slide element 8 is provided on its lower side with two opposed flanges 44 which are inter 100 rupted over a part of their length, as shown by reference numeral 45 In order to prevent the slide element 8 from disengaging itself inadvertently from its support, the element 8 may be fixed to the support for 105 example by means of pegs or projections of the support and cooperating with the flanges 44, so as to prevent the element 8 from sliding from the support once it has been attached thereto 110 It will be clear that numerous modifications may be effected to the above described embodiments.
Thus, for example instead of springs 10, 20, 34, 34 ‘, one may use elastic resilient 115 pads made of rubber, or pneumatic or hydraulic devices The number of support devices provided for switching point depends upon the length of the tongue-rails thereof Two support devices which are 120 used to support the two parallel tonguerails of a switching point may be placed on a common seating.
