and by the following statement:-
This invention relates to gear change assembles, in or for use in cycles or other vehicles, having a control lever for a control cable.
The control of the gear changes in the front (i e on the crank gear) or in the rear (i e the sprockets of the free wheel) of a cycle is generally effected by means of a cable system, operated by a lever, which acts on means for displacing the chain thereby changing the gear The cable displacements, and consequently the angular movements of the lever, differ according to whether a front gear change or a rear gear change is concerned The levers used therefore are designed especially for the gear change which they are to actuate Several types of lever therefore have to be manufactured.
According to the invention there is provided in, or for use in, a cycle or other vehicle, a gear change assembly including a lever rotatably mounted on a shaft, which lever includes bearing surfaces for use in winding and supporting a cable, and means for securing an end of the cable to said lever, said bearing surfaces being constructed and arranged so that, in use, any one of said bearing surfaces can be used for winding and supporting the cable and so that, for a given angular movement of the lever about a shaft, the distance moved by a fixed point on one bearing surface is different from the distance moved by a fixed point on another bearing surface.
Usually a lever in a gear change assembly according to the invention will have two bearing surfaces and, conveniently, these bearing surfaces are disposed so that the bearing surfaces lie on opposite sides of the shaft Preferably, the bearing surfaces are constructed and arranged so that the paths for a cable around each of the bearing surfaces lie in a common plane which is orthogonal to the axis of the shaft Advantageously, the bearing surfaces are each the arcuate periphery of a sector, the sectors being of different radii When there are two bearing surfaces one of the sectors will conveniently be approximately semi-circular.
When fitting a lever to a gear change assembly according to the invention, it is possible to select the bearing surface which is the more appropriate for winding and supporting the control cable, according to whether the gear is at the front or rear of the bicycle If it is desired to use the lever for controlling the cable of a different gear system, it is a simple matter to locate the cable on another bearing surface, this being effected, for example, by simply reversing the lever on its shaft.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show more clearly how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lever of a gear change assembly according to the present invention; Figures 2 and 3 are each a partial sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 7 and the line 3-3 of Figure 7 respectively, illustrating the winding of cables on levers according to the invention; Figure 4 is a perspective view showing parts of a lever assembly of a gear change assembly according to the present invention; Figure 5 is a perspective view showing part of the lever assembly of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a side view showing two levers mounted for controlling the front and rear 1,574,741 gear changes of a bicycle; Figure 7 is a plan view, taken along the line 7-7 of Figure 6, of the two levers; and Figure 8 is a partial side view of a lever of a gear change assembly according to the present invention, showing a modified housing for the end of, the cable on the lever, and the corresponding end of said cable.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a control lever 1 having a hub la which has an opening lb for rotatably mounting the lever on a bearing shaft.
The lever hub la is non-symmetrical about an axis x-x of the lever, and is provided on one side with a groove lc in a sector of radius R 1 and on the other side with a groove Id in a sector of radius R 2, greater than the radius Ri, the two grooves being joined to form a continuous groove le by a section of varying radius Along an axis y-y, perpendicular to the axis x-x and located substantially tangentially to the groove, there is provided an opening If for the passage of the control cable and, at each end of this opening there are provided chambers 1 g serving as a housing for securing a pin Cl at the end of the cable C (see Figures 1 and 3) The interface between the chamber lg and the opening If provides the necessary thrust on the pin Cl.
In Figure 2, the lever 1 is shown mounted for rotation on a shaft 3 The control cable C is shown wound on the sector of radius R 2.
This arrangement corresponds to the control of a rear gear change In this Figure the lever is shown disposed in abutment, by way of its projection 1 h, against a projection 8 b of a segment 8 whose lower end serves as a bearing for a sheath stop as described hereinafter.
This position of abutment, giving rise to maximum winding of the cable, corresponds to the positioning of the chain on the largest sprocket of the free wheel.
In Figure 3, the lever is again shown mounted for rotation on the shaft 3 but is arranged for controlling the front gear change, the control cable C being wound on a sector of radius RI In the same way as in Figure 2 the lever is in the position of maximum winding of the cable, i e the chain is on the largest front chain wheel.
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7, show two levers coupled as a unit for attachment to a bicycle frame member.
The lever LI (Figures 2, 6 and 7) is the lever for controlling the rear gear change and the lever L 2 (Figures 3, 6 and 7) is the lever for controlling the front gear change.
One lever could be mounted on a bearing shaft for the control of either a front or a rear gear change by simple reversal on the shaft so that the control cable winds either on the sector of radius R I or on the sector of radius R 2.
Each of the levers L 1 and L 2 is mounted as described with reference to Figure 4, but for simplicity only one side of the mounting has been shown with the components separated and aligned in their order of assembly Each lever assembly comprises a block 2 forming a half-collar at 2 a, through which there passes 70 a shaft 3 held transversely and angularly by screws 4 and 5 of the other half-collar 6, the screws extending through the block and into the shaft 3 The two half-collars 2 and 6 are positioned and clamped onto a frame 75 member 7 (Figure 6) in a known manner At each end of the block a polygonal section 2 b receives the corresponding opening 8 a of a segment 8 which has projections 8 b which limit the angular movement of the lever by 80 engagement with projections 1 h of the lever.
The segment 8 is mounted between the lever 1 and the block 2.
On its faces the lever has chambers li receiving rings 9 with an oblong opening hav 85 ing flat parts 9 a for engagement on corresponding parts 3 a of the shaft 3.
Next to the lever and its outer ring 9 there is mounted on the flat end 3 a a small plate 10 with an oblong opening 10 a, then a spring 90 washer 11 which allows the axial force on the lever to be adjusted by way of a bolt 12 screwed into the shaft 3, the adjustment being made by way of a winged cover 13 cooperating with the bolt 12 95 The segment 8 and the small plate 10 (Figure 5) have extensions 8 c and 10 b orientated relative to their openings 8 a and 10 a, such that the axis of a cylinder 14, whose ends 14 a are held by the openings 8 d and 1 Oc, is sub:100 stantially parallel to the axis of the shaft 3.
The cylinder 14 has an opening 14 b for the sheath of the cable and an opening 14 c for the cable, such that the cylinder serves as a sheath stop for the cable sheath The cylinder 105 14 is free to rotate in the openings 8 d and 1 Oc so as to ensure that no matter which sector is used the end of the sheath is in alignment with the cable as it leaves the sector being used 110 In Figure 6, the levers are shown mounted on a plunger tube 7, i e under the handle bar stem The cables issuing from the levers run through the sheath stops and the sheaths G run down along the plunger tube and the rear 115 fork to connect the front and rear gear changes.
The levers could be attached at other positions on the frame, particularly on the frame tube between the front fork and the crank 120 gear box, or between the front fork and the saddle joint.
Figure 8 shows a lever with a modified housing for attaching the control cable to the lever 125 A lever 1 has a circular opening li orthogonal to axis x-x The circular opening li intersects with the bearing surface around which a cable C is wound, and is substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft on which the 130 1,574,741 lever is mounted An element C 2 which is an easy fit in the opening ii but cannot pass down either of slots 1 l connected to the opening li is welded onto the end of the cable C.
The cable is mounted on the lever by inserting the element C 2 in the opening li and passing the cable C through one of the slots 1 j such that the cable can be wound round one of the grooves Id or lc The grooves formed on sectors of different radii comprise bearing surfaces for the cable This embodiment allows either of the grooves Id or lc to be selected for winding and supporting the cable whilst requiring only one central housing for the end of the cable This modified housing slightly reduces the length of cable wound around the lever.
The embodiments of the invention described above may give rise to the following advantages:-the provision of a single type of lever to control different gear changes, by positioning the lever on one side or the other of the bearing axle, in the case of coupled levers, or by reversing the lever on its axle; the control cables being adapted to be wound equally well on either side of the levers by the provision of two pin housings or of a central housing for one cable end in pastille-shaped form.
the precise adaptation of the lever to a different course of cable displacement by winding on different half-diameters.
the self-orientating mounting of the sheath stops allowing the exit of the cable to be aligned with its passage opening whatever the half-diameter chosen for winding.
the attachment to all appropriate points of the frame or its fitments of the levers as thus provided.
Claims (1)
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:-
1 In, or for use in, a cycle or other vehicle, a gear change assembly including a lever rotatably mounted on a shaft, which lever includes bearing surfaces for use in winding and supporting a cable, and means for securing an end of the cable to said lever, said bearing surfaces being constructed and arranged so that, in use any one of said bearing surfaces can be used for winding and supporting the cable and so that, for a given angular movement of the lever about a shaft, the distance moved by a fixed point on one bearing surface is different from the distance moved by a fixed point on another bearing surface.
2 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the lever has two bearing surfaces.
3 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said two bearing surfaces are arranged so that the bearing surfaces lie on opposite sides of the sihaft.
4 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the bearing surfaces are arranged so that there is a plane orthogonal to the axis of the shaft which passes through both or all the bearing surfaces.
A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein the bearing surfaces are arcs of different radii 70 6 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 5, wherein there are two bearing surfaces one of which is of substantially semicircular shape.
7 A gear change assembly as claimed in 75 any one of the preceding claims wherein said means for securing an end of the cable comprises one or more housings for the end of the cable, there being one or more passages connecting said one or more housings to the 80 bearing surfaces.
8 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 7, when appendant to Claims 2 and 3, wherein only one housing is provided, said housing being disposed between the ends of 85 the two bearing surfaces, and wherein the passages for connecting said housing to the bearing surfaces are formed as slots.
9 A gear change assembly as claimed in Claim 7, when appendant to Claims 2 and 3, 90 wherein there are two housings each of which is at the end of a passage of circular crosssection whose axis is substantially tangential to the two bearing surfaces whereby communication is assured between each bearing 95 surface and said passage.
A gear change assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the lever is mounted on a shaft disposed between a member provided with projections 100 serving as angular travel stops for the lever, and a plate, said member and said plate being arranged so that they are angularly orientated to hold a sheath stop, and wherein there is provided adjustable spring means for 105 applying an axial force to the lever.
11 A gear change assembly according to Claim 10, wherein the sheath stop is mounted for free rotation relative to said member and said plate such that the end of a 110 sheath of a cable is always in alignment with the cable as the cable leaves a bearing surface.
12 A gear change assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with refer 115 ence to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
