Abstract

165,822. Mordey, W. M. March 28, 1019. Magnetic separators.-A magnetic separator is fitted with a polyphase alternating-current magnetic system, and the stream of mineral matter to be concentrated passes longitudinally over a long narrow path so that the matter responsive to the rotary field is gradually swept to one side, and the inert matter moves in the opposite lateral direction. The ore &c., usually in the form of pulp, is fed to one end of a series of launders d, Fig. 3, which may be inclined both in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and are arranged above or below long parallel poles e<1> of the magnet e. The passage through the launders may be assisted by agitation or vibration. In order to render the material more responsive to the rotary field, it may be subjected to a preliminary magnetic induction during its passage from the hopper to the launder, or the upper end of the magnet e may be more strongly magnetized than the lower end. The separated responsive matter may be discharged either at the end of the launder or over the sides. The windings g, Fig. 7, of the magnet e may be arranged so that the movement of the responsive matter a’ proceeds from the central part of a launder in both directions to the sides, the inert matter a gravitating towards the centre; the magnet and launder in this form are curved slightly at right-angles to their length. The launder may have a cover of magnetic material, or magnets may be used both above and below. In another form, the material flows over the surface of the magnet poles, the spaces between being of the closed slot type. In another form, dry material is carried through the rotary field by an endless belt n, Fig. 10, the surface of which may be flat or curved.
