Abstract

166,580. Lewis, I. N. June 16, 1919. Machine guns. – Relates to trigger mechanisms which are adjustable for » single-shot » and » antomatic » fire or to a safety position, and consists in mounting the trigger and sear on pivots so that they directly engage one another, the distance between their pivots being adjustable for the purpose of changing the fire. The invention is shown in Fig. 1 applied to the modified Lewis gun described in Specification 166,579, the breech bolt 1 being shown retained in the rearward or » ready to fire » position by a sear 21 engaging the bent 28 in the bolt. The sear, which is mounted on a pivot 23, has a forward arm 31 which rests upon a surface 32 situated between the sides of a forked extension of a spring-controlled trigger 22 pivotally mounted on a pin 34. The pin 34 passes through an elongated hole in the trigger and is eccentrically mounted on a shaft 35 fitted with a handle 36 adjustable to three positions. The pin 34 is shown in Fig. 1 adjusted to the » single-shot » position, the surface 32 on the trigger having the usual slip engagement with the sear. When the handle 36 is turned through a right angle to the left, Fig. 14, the surface 32 is moved further under the sear so that the trigger when pulled holds the sear depressed for automatic fire. On turning the handle 36 to the right, the surface 32 is moved clear of the sear and the mechanism is at » safe.»
