Abstract

172,503. Withers, J. S., (Perfecto Gear Differential Co.). Nov. 18, 1920. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-Two-speed epicyclic gearing is combined with differential gearing, the sun pinion 5 of the epicyclic gear being moved axially to be clutched either to the differential casing 23 at 8 for the direct drive, or to a fixed member at 51 for a reduced speed. The gearing is enclosed in the axle casing 9 having bearings 46 for the two side parts 40 of the driving member 6 which carries a toothed annulus 4 engaging planet pinions 3 rotating on spindles 30 fixed to the differential casing. The sun pinion 5 is formed with a long sleeve 50 which slides on one of the axle shafts 1, and is operated by a rocking shaft 65 through forks 58 and a loose collar 56. The sun pinion is shown in the low gear position in which teeth 51 on the sleeve engage teeth in a fixed plate 7; for the direct drive the sleeve is moved axially to the left until the sun pinion engages with a toothed spring 8 carried by the spindles 30 as well as with the planet pinions 3.
