Abstract

173,947. Mitchell, F. J. Nov. 25, 1920. Axles and axle structures; retaining parts when failures occur.-In an axle assemblv of the type in which the wheel 6 runs on ball or roller bearings 5 on a sleeve extension 2 secured to the axle tube 1 and is secured to the driving-axle 4, means are provided for preventing the wheel from coming off should the axle break, such means comprising a retaining-ring 11 screwed on the sleeve and engaging the ball &c. race. The retaining ring is additionally secured by means of a spring ring 12 provided with a finger 12 projecting through the ring and into the sleeve. Outer and inner cheek plates 7, 8 are secured to the wheel, the inner plate having a sleeve 8a carrying the outer ball-races, and the outer plate being secured to the axle end by the usual cone 9, key 10, and axle-nut.
