Abstract
177,380. Mills Equipment Co., Ltd., and Lethern, A. A. March 7, 1921. Knapsacks; hold-alls.- A pack or knapsack comprises two superposed compartments A, D, Figs. 3 and 5, each having its opening at the top and adapted to be so connected or hinged together that the opening of the lower compartment D is covered by the base of the upper compartment A. The two compartments may be connected or hinged together by a common wall, or they may be separate as shown and connected together by straps G and buckles F at the front and straps F<3> and buckles A<5> at the back. The compartments when connected together present a hollowed back wall giving an air gap between the back of the complete pack and the wearer’s body, the hollowed back being obtained by tightening the straps F<3>. When not required, the lower compartment can be collapsed and folded against a wall of the upper compartment. The supporting-slings B are always connected to the upper compartment A, the complementary slings B<1> being connected to the base of the lower or upper compartment according as to whether both compartments or the upper one are being used. The lower compartment has a projecting flap D<2> which forms its cover when it is separated from the upper compartment and serves as a hinged flap when the compartments are connected together. A hold-all, Fig. 8, for articles of clothing is adapted to be attached to the front face of the lower compartment, and consists of a central pocket with one or more internal flaps L<1> beneath which the article is inserted. Lateral boot pockets M provided with covers M<1> are provided at each end of the hold-all and the whole is secured to the lower compartment by straps from one pocket passing across the back of the compartments and secured to buckles on the other pocket; the straps may pass through loops and beneath the straps F<3> on the lower compartment; the boot pockets M may be omitted and end flaps provided on the hold-all. The upper compartment has side flaps C<1> and a cover A<1> which has straps A<4> secured to buckles near its base when this compartment is used alone, to buckles F’ on the lower compartment when both compartments are in use and to buckles L<2> on the holdall when the complete pack is in use. Transverse straps H on the upper compartment serve to connect a steel helmet, waterproof sheet, &c., to the pack and loops J, J<1> and straps A<6>, may be provided for securing an entrenching or cutting tool.
