Abstract

188,451. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Sept. 14, 1921. Resistance furnaces.-A vacuum furnace for use in making silica glass comprises a tank 1 which is provided with a pipe 15 for evacuation of the air and may be fitted with a water jacket 7. The silica is contained in a cylindrical graphite crucible 8 supported within a helical resistance 9 that is provided with terminals 10, 11 supported by water cooled tubes 12, 13. The resistance is surrounded by a heat screen 14 consisting of a shell of carbon containing a refractory material. The furnace may be fitted at its upper part with a removable column 4 through which a shaft 5 carrying at its end a piston 6 may be introduced for compressing the plastic silica. Alternatively, the silica may be compressed by gas introduced into the furnace through the pipe 15.
