189,852. Haddan, A. J. H., (Titeflex Metal Hose Corporation). Sept. 2, 1921. Hinge and swivelling joints with packing operated by fluid pressure.-In a swivel coupling for pipes in which a resilient packing element between the two coupling members is operated by fluid pressure, the packing element, either in the form of a helically corrugated tube or of a diaphragm, is secured to one member and bears against a seating of the other member. In Fig. 1, a helically corrugated tube 14, which may be constructed as described in Specification 101,418, is soldered at one end to a flange 13 on a plug 2 screwing into one end of a sleeve 1, the other end of which has a flange 3 against which the shoulder 8 of the second member 7 bears to form a swivel bearing. The other end of the tube 14 is soldered to a seat member 15 which is normally pressed against the shoulder 9 on the member 7, a gasket 16 being preferably interposed, by the resiliency of the tube 14, the joint being made tighter by the fluid pressure in the pipes. In order to prevent tilting of the coupling members with respect to each other, the projection 10 on the member 7 enters the recess 11 in the plug 2 and is also limited in its longitudinal movement by the flange 6 on the plug 2. In. a modification, Fig. 3, the packing element is in the form of a diaphragm 25, with a central hole 26, clamped between a plug 19 and sleeve 18 and having a seat member 27 which is normally pressed by the spring of the diaphragm 25 against the end of the pipe 20, the flange 21 on which turns upon the flange 22 on the sleeve 18 in the swivelling action. A gasket 28 is preferably interposed between the seat member 27 and pipe 20. Fluid pressure in the ‘pipes increases the pressure of the diaphragm seat member 27 against the end of the pipe 20.
