12,206. Thompson, W. P., [Conrad, R.]. May 28. Ball bearings.-Relates to ball bearings with unbroken annular races and with connected or separate spacing-pieces between the balls. An inelastic ring d, Fig. 1, carried by means of bends e by the balls c, or an incomplete elastic ring d’, Fig. 3, without bends, forms the spacing-piece. The spacing-pieces may consist of separate springs. The springs, of circular or rectangular section to prevent jamming between balls and braces, may have their ends bent, Fig. 5, and flattened each into the plane of the last coil. They may be of varying diameter along their length, or their ends may be bent outwards to lie along the central axis of the spring. Flat or other strips of wire, Fig. 14, in which the bridging-piece is straight, curved, or bent, and also split tubes may be used. Split or complete tubes with nicked ends may be used, the tongues between the nicks being untouched, or bent outwards or inwards. The spiral and strip springs may be used together. To insert the balls between the races, the ring b is pressed against the inside of the ring a, and as many balls as convenient are placed between the two rings. Half the balls are then run round each side while the ring b is brought to the centre of the ring a. The ring b is then pressed obliquely and towards its former eccentric position, by hand or tool, and another ball is pressed or drops between the two previously inserted set of balls. Deformation of the rings by change of temperature may also be used to insert the last ball. To remove the balls, the operations are reversed.
