Abstract

4200. Lutter, K. Feb. 20. Ball bearings.-In a ball bearing having several rows of balls, a filling-recess is made at one side of one ring only, and is level with the bottom of the ball race. The inner ring 1, Fig. 3, has two grooved races 3, 3<1>, and the outer ring 5 has a central rib 5<1>. A filling-recess 6 is formed on one side of the ring 1 In assembling the bearing, the balls 2 are placed in the groove 3, the rings being separated, and the ring 5 is then passed over the balls 2 from left to right, the balls 2<1> being inserted finally in the groove 3<1> by means of the recess 6. In place of the recess 6, the whole edge of the ring may be cut away almost to the depth of the ball race, allowing all the balls 2<1> to be forced in simultaneously. Several modifications are described, in which more than two rows of balls are used. In that shown in Fig. 7, the balls 25, 26, 27 are placed in the ring 25, and the balls 28 on the ring 23 before the rings are placed one within the other. The balls 29 are inserted through the recess 30. A cage may be used to space the balls. Fig. 10 shows a combined journal and thrust bearing which is assembled in a similar manner, a filling-recess 50 being formed in the outer race.
