Abstract

23,407. Schantz, E. M. Oct. 13. Recording conditions existing in a factory &c. The apparatus, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, comprises a battery A, a recording- apparatus B, a workmen’s time recorder C, a clock-driven circuitcloser D, indicating dials E, devices F the condition of which is to be recorded, and a governor contact device G arranged in the manner shown. Recording particular operations. – The recording – apparatus has a cylindrical type anvil 28, Fig. 10, with four different kinds of type in longitudinal rows so that the type printed is varied when the anvil is partially rotated on a horizontal axis by an arm 33, Fig. 1, carrying an armature 34 adapted to be attracted by one of the electro-magnets 39, 40, 41. The extension 35 of the arm 33 is insulated, and normally engages a terminal 351 connected to the negative side of the battery A. The extension 35 engages other terminals 36, 37, 38 when the armature 34 is attracted by the corresponding electro-magnets 39, 40, 41. Separate impression hammers 48, 49, 50, three only being shown, arranged in a transverse row across the sheet, are operated by electro-magnets 42, 43, 44, the sheet passing over a table 201 as it is drawn from one drum to another. When any one of the magnets 42 is energized, it pulls up its armature 45, causing its corresponding hammer 48 to strike one of the types on the cylinder 28. The condition of an indicating dial &c. at a particular time is indicated by the distinctive nature of the mark, and by its horizontal and longitudinal positions on the sheet, an example of which is shown in Fig. 2. Each indicating dial E, which may be that of a thermometer or a pressure gauge, has insulated segments 88 over which an index hand 87 moves, the corresponding segments 88 being connected respectively to separate conductors 90. The hand 87 is not normally in contact with the segments but is drawn against one of them whenever the corresponding electro-magnet 86 is energized by the circuit-closer. Several contacts F are adapted to be closed, to indicate the condition of various machines &c. For example, a starting-lever 91 of a planing-machine may close contacts 92, 93, thus energizing a relay magnet 94 which closes the contacts 95, 96. A door-contactor 97 and a push 100 may also be in multiple with the contacts 95, 96, the door-contactor consisting of an inclined tube containing mercury which, when the door closes, completes the circuit between two terminals. A momentary contactor 101 may also be in multiple with the contacts 95, 96. The contactor 101 consists of a ring carrying insulated spaced segments 103 between which are pockets for mercury; a brush 102 engages the ring 101, and a conductor 105 enters the core. As the ring rotates, the mercury is thrown from one pocket to the next and connects the core and the ring. Factory &c. time-recorders, dial-type.-The workmen’s apparatus is shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5. An annular conductor 51 is connected to the negative side of the battery, and an arm 53 carries a plunger 54 which may pass through an aperture corresponding to a particular number on the dial, and press back from a fixed contact plate 71 one of a number of tongues 72 against the conductor 51. The arm 53 also carries a cam 55, Fig. 4, which operates a dog 60 to move a spring 61 into contact with one of the fixed contacts 64, 65, 66, according to the position of the crank arm. The spring is connected to the conductor 51. A switch 69 connected to the contact 65 engages one of two contacts to indicate » in » or » out » respectively. The arm 53 is connected through a bell 70, Fig. 1, to the battery. The contacts 71 passed by the button 54 in the first 180 degrees of its travel are, respectively, connected to the opposite contacts 74, and, from the corresponding contacts 73, conductors 90 lead to the other apparatus of which records are to be obtained. The contacts 72 are connected respectively to the magnets 42 &c. whereby certain hammers are assigned to certain workmen. Circuit – closing switch D, Fig. 1. A clockdriven rotating member 77 closes the contacts 79, 80 for a limited time; one contact 79 is connected to the contact-plate 64 of the workmen’s time-recorder, and the other is on the conductor between a relay 81 and a hand 76. This hand 76 moves over insulated segments 75, the opposite segments being connected together in pairs, which are connected to a magnet 86. The relay 81, when energized, closes the contacts 82, 83. From the former contact a conductor leads through the magnet 39 to the positive side of the battery A, and from the contact 83 a conductor leads to the negative side of the battery. Recording number and time of working of machines.-In the governor contact device G, a shaft 120 rotated by a steam-engine &c. carries a governor which keeps the contacts 122, 123 closed when the engine is running. A wiper 127 driven from the shaft 120 opens a contact 128 and closes another contact 129 momentarily in each revolution. Three contacts 131, 132, 133, connected in circuits as shown, are closed together when a cord operating the whistle 130 is pulled. Vibrations, recording.-A vibratory contact consisting of a leaf-spring terminal 107 carrying a weight 108 and a corresponding terminal 106 may also be arranged in multiple with the momentary contactor. A contact 110 is normally held away from a corresponding contact 109 by a magnet 111, which is energized so long as a » seismo-contactor » is not jarred, for example by a night watchman. This » seismo- » contactor » consists of a weighted arm held loosely against an adjustable terminal 119. The » seismo-contactor » may be arranged with a telephone receiver, as shown in Fig. 8, a diaphragm 151 being attached to a lever 157 the other end of which is connected to the contactor. The lever 157 is pivoted to a frame suspended from the ceiling. The receiver is in a circuit including a transmitter 147 having a megaphone placed above a workman’s bench &c. where sounds actuate the transmitter. Several «seismo- » contactors » may be connected to actuat different magnets 48, 49, 50.
