Abstract
30,212. Lanzdorf, A. Dec. 29, 1909, [Convention date]. Couplings, operating from engine; couplings, automatic.-The last vehicle of a train can be uncoupled from the locomotive by means of pneumatic pressure or vacuum. The train-pipe is made up of sections o on each vehicle. When the vehicles are brought together in coupling, the tapered pipe-end g on one vehicle enters the casing A on the other and moves overlapping spring-pressed plates a radially outwards. One of these plates is connected to a slide b, which normally closes the end of the train-pipe, and, as the plate is pressed outwards by the entering end g of another section, the slide is opened, and at the same time a passage between the train-pipe and the uncoupling-cylinder f is closed by a valve d. There is thus free communication through the train-pipe between the locomotive and the last vehicle of the train, and all the uncoupling cylinders except the last one are shut off from the train-pipe, so that, when the driver admits pressure or vacuum to the trainpipe, the piston t on the last vehicle is moved to uncouple it. As the uncoupled vehicle leaves the train, air enters or leaves the train-pipe through grooves n in the pipe end g before the slide b has closed, to prevent an unintentional uncoupling of the next vehicle on the train. The coupling, Fig. 4, comprises a hook y’ and eye h<1> on one vehicle, and a double hook y and eye k on the other. The hook and eye on each vehicle are connected by a link w so that they move together; thus, in coupling, as the link k rides up over the hook y’, the hook y is raised to engage the eye k<1>. When the piston t is moved for uncoupling, it acts upon a bell-crank lever h<2> and raises the eye k and hook y. The coupling may be a duplicate one, as shown in Fig. 4, the connexions being such that, as the eye k and hook y are rocked upwards in coupling, the hook y’ and eye k’ are rocked dowmvards. The eye k is locked in the hook y<1> of the opposite vehicle by a projection s. In uncoupling, one arm of a fork, formed on or connected to the piston-rod, engages the bellcrank lever h<2> to uncouple the hooks and eyes as described above, and the other arm of the fork engages the bell-crank lever h<1>, whereby a lever p is rocked, and a piece r lifted to raise the locking-projection s out of the hook.
