Abstract

195,307. Rushen, P. C., (Siemens- Schuckertwerke Ges.). June 8, 1922. Clutches, friction, of the kind which are put into operation by braking an auxiliary disc or the like. The movable element of the clutch is operated by a linkage acting in a plane perpendicular to the main clutch axis, one link member moving over its dead centre during such operation. A clutch band 4 engaging loosely at one end with a lug 18 on a plate 3 secured to the driving-shaft 1 is pivoted at the other end to a lever 8 pivoted on the plate 3 and connected by a link 9 to a pin 21 on a brake drum 10, which carries a toothed segment 14 gearing, through a pinion 16 carried by the plate 3, with a gear-wheel 15 carried by a second brake drum 11. When the drum 10 is stopped, the parts 3, 4, 8, 9, &c. move on counterclockwise until they take the position shown in Fig. 2, where the link 9 has passed the normal through the pin 21. At this stage, the lever 8 strikes an abutment 23 on the link 9 to arrest further movement, so that the linkage is selflocking and the brake may be removed. Stops on the parts 3, 10 may replace the abutments on the link and lever. Arrest of the drum 11 acting through the gearing reverses the movement of the link 9 and disengages the clutch.
