Abstract

197,669. Bennet, J. A. R. May 9, 1922, [Convention date]. Milling-machines; turning.- In a copying-lathe particularly for turning piston rings &c. the movements of the cross-slide are positively effected both to and from the work by means of guide rollers engaging two complementary formers secured together and rotated coaxially with the work, the complementary former being first shaped from the main former in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The main former 1 is fixed in a rotatable ring 2 mounted on the slide 4 of the milling-machine and is engaged by means of the weights 12 with a roller 8 on a fixed support 9. The complementary former 7 is then milled by a cutter 14 located diametrically opposite to the roller 8. The two formers are then mounted in a lathe as shown in Fig. 3. The saddle 17 carries a crossslide 18 having arms 19, 20, provided with rollers 21, 22 engaging the formers 7, 1 respectively, the cross-slide being thus moved positively in both directions. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the two formers are turned relatively to each other and are engaged by rollers 21, 22 at points which are not diametrically opposed. The rollers are carried by double-armed levers connected at their lower ends by an adjustable rod 26 and pivoted to the lathe-headstock by means of hollow journals carrying shafts 29 provided with slotted vertical arms 32. The vertical arms are connected to the cross-slide 18 through members 33 which may be adjusted to vary the scale of the reproduction.
