Abstract

An article made of an alloy containing chromium and iron, e.g. a chromium-containing steel, and optionally one or more elements, e.g. aluminium, silicon, titanium, manganese, copper, molybdenum, is treated to improve the corrosion-resistance of a surface layer of the article, the treatment comprising heating the article in an oxygen-containing gaseous atmosphere in a total vacuum of about 10<-1> to 10<-8> mm Hg, preferably down to about 10<-5> mm Hg, at a temperature at which diffusion of chromium, and any other reactive alloy present with respect to a tendency to combine with oxygen, to the surface of the article becomes perceptible and at which temperature the properties of the alloy remain substantially unchanged, the treatment being maintained until a surface layer containing oxidized chromium of a predetermined thickness, preferably 10<-9> to 10<-7> m, has formed. For instance, the treatment may be carried out in a vacuum of about 3.10<-5> to 10<-5> mm Hg at a temperature of about 500 DEG C for 4-6 hours.
