Abstract
Closed-circuit processes and apparatus, for the transfer of heat, in which a refrigerant is successively compressed by a rotary vane compressor (10b), condensed in a condenser (12b) through the removal of heat, throttled by a primary expansion restrictor (14b), and vaporised in an evaporator (16b) through the take-up of heat, before being again compressed by said compressor (10b), characterised in that the coefficient of performance is improved by throttling condensed refrigerant in one or more additional stages by respective additional expansion restrictors (18b and 44b), which may be located in series (18b) and/or in parallel (44b) with the primary expansion restrictor (14b) and the evaporator (16b), with at least a proportion of the refrigerant vapour produced at the or each of said additional stages being returned (52 and 22b) to an intermediate port of said compressor (10b), where it combines with refrigerant vapour which is already being compressed.
