Abstract
A toroidal safety insert for an inflated, tubeless, pneumatic tire comprises a torus-like core 34, tire cord 36 radially wound around the torus-like core, and at least one load bearing member 38, 40 having tire cord 42 therein, said member being circumferentially wound around substantially the middle one third of the radially outer surface of the radially wound tire cord. The insert, when situated within the deflated tire, has its thick, oval, central portion 28 supporting the tread portion of the deflated tire and each of its thin end portions 30, 32 lying between and supporting the folded portions of a respective, collapsed sidewall of the deflated tire. The core is preferably of an open or closed cell foam, and the tire cords 36, and 42 may be of the same or different materials.
