Abstract

A method of constructing a catalyst assembly comprises inserting a resilient catalytic element 10 into a metal case 11 and reducing the internal dimensions of the case, e.g. by moving segments 31 inwardly, so that the catalytic element is compressed to produce a high radial load between the metal case and catalytic element, said radial load preventing relative movement between the catalytic element and the metal case. The initial compression may be followed by further pressing or rolling. The catalytic element may be made from an intrinsically resilient substrate, for example a metallic honeycomb or reticulated cellular structure, or may be formed from a rigid substrate, for example a ceramic honeycomb or reticulated cellular structure, surrounded by a layer of resilient material.
