Abstract
202,406. Huguet, A. C. May 18, 1922. Lathes.-The slide-rest of a copying- lathe is provided with a plate having two parallel sliding members carrying the tool and tracer respectively and connected by a lever which is adjustably pivoted to vary the scale of reproduction. The slide-rest 2, Fig. 1, provided with the usual cross slide is fitted with a plate 3 having dovetail guides for parallel sliding members 7, 8 connected by a link 6 adjustably pivoted on a pin 5. The member 7 carries the spring-pressed tracer 15 contacting directly with a pattern 19 adjustably mounted on a support 20 carried by a cross-member 22. while the member 8 carries a tool 16 engaging the workpiece 17 mounted on the face-plate of the lathe. The profile of the pattern is thus conjugate to that of the work required, but in a modification the tracer 15 may be carried by a curved arm 96, Fig. 17, to permit of a positive pattern being used. The positions of the tool and tracer in the plate 3 may be interchanged. The tool is fed towards the work by means of a screw operated from a handle 26. In a modification, Fig. 2, the device may be arranged for operating on work mounted between centres, the member 22 being replaced by a member 31 disposed longitudinally of the bed and carrying a support 30 for a tailstock 29 supporting the rear end of the workpiece. The pattern 19 is adjustably mounted on a member 20. In a further modification, Fig. 15, the work 89 and pattern 87 are both mounted on a shaft 85 rotated between the centres. In order to reproduce the profile of a short pattern on a long work-piece the model may be traversed during the longitudinal movement of the slide by means of a forked member secured to the plate 3. In another modification, Fig. 12. the longitudinal dimensions of the work with respect to the pattern may be varied as required. The plate 3 is provided with an extension 63 having a guideway for a slide 66 supporting a transverse member 67 carrying the tool-holder 70, the movement of the latter being controlled in a direction transverse to the work by a tracer slide 7 through an extended lever 68 adjustably pivoted at 5. The slide 66 is connected through a lever 75 adjustably pivoted at 72 to a link 77 secured to the slide-rest 2 so that as the latter is traversed the tool-holder is moved longitudinally over the work, the ratios between the longitudinal movements of the tracer and pattern being variable by means of the lever 75. If desired, the tool 16 may be replaced by a rotary cutter. Tool-holders.-A number of work-pieces in series may be turned simultaneously by mounting several tools as shown in Fig. 18, the tools being clamped by bolts 99 between plates 97<1> secured to the member 8 by a third plate 12 and bolts H.
