Abstract
A tool for tightening or loosening nuts includes an annular socket 1 that engages the nut and has a series of bevelled gear teeth 8 along one rim 5. A pinion 13 disposed at an angle, e.g. perpendicular, to the socket 1 engages with the gear teeth and is driven by a shaft 12 the rotation of which is used to tighten or loosen a nut. The socket 1 has a groove 2 in which lies a band 3 connected by legs 9 attached to a carrier 4 for the shaft 12 which may be hand or power driven. The socket may have a nut retaining clamp.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Tool for rotating a nut or bolt head
This invention relates to tools for tightening or
loosening nuts or bolts through the rotation of the
nut or bolt. The invention may find particular application in hand manipulated tools, for example to provide a tool for tightening nuts in certain parts of machinery where access is limited.
The invention has arisen in response to the need for a type of spanner that can be used to tighten nuts or rotate bolts where there is – insufficient space for a normal torque spanner to be moved.
According to the present invention there is provided.
a tool for rotating a nut or bolt head, the tool comprising a receiving member for receiving a nut
or bolt head and having a curved surface that is shaped to engage the angle outer surface of a nut or bolt to which the tool is applied, the receiving member including circularly disposed gear teeth.
a support member on which the receiving
member is mounted for rotation about its axis
a gear wheel mounted for rotation about its
longitudinal axis and so that its axis of rotation is not co-axiai with the axis of rotation of the
receiving member, the teeth of the gear wheel
meshing with the gear teeth on the receiving
member so that the receiving member may be
rotated by rotating the gear wheel.
The receiving member may comprise an
annular member mounted for rotation about its
longitudinal axis, and the gear teeth may be
disposed on one rim thereof.
The axis of rotation of the receiving member
may be perpendicular to that of the gear wheel so
that the receiving member may be rotated by
rotating the gear wheel in a perpendicular plane.
Embodiments of the present invention will now
be described, by way of example only, with
reference to the accompanying drawing which is
an axial sectional view of a tool for rotating a nut
along a screw thread.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the Figure is for use in tightening or loosening
hexagonal nuts. The tool includes an annular nut
receiving socket 1 open at both ends. The socket 1
has a cut away channel 2 in its outer cylindrical surface, which channel is co-axial with the socket
1 and rectangular in cross-section. The channel 2 receives loosely a bearing ring 3 on which the socket 1 is mounted for rotation about its axis. The bearing ring 3 comprises a strip of metal bent to form the major part of a ring, and with its two end portions not meetirig but turned outwardly from the ring to provide two parallel support limbs 9.
The ring 3, however, encircles the major part of the socket 1 and is sufficiently closely disposed around the socket to prevent the removal of socket 1 from it.
The internal surface of the socket 1 is shaped with alternating ridges and grooves, eg. ridge 14, extending parallel to the axis of the socket. These ridges provide the engagement surfaces of the socket for engaging the angles sides of a nut that is inserted into it.
The rim 5 around one open end of the socket is cut to provide bevelled gear teeth 8 projecting axially from around this rim surface.
The two limbs 9 of the bearing ring 3 are secured by rivets to the lower parts of opposite side surfaces of a support block 4. The block 4 is rectangular in its lower region, while in its upper region the two side surfaces to which the limbs 9 are secured are curved and are continuous at the top of the block.
The block 4 has a bore 10 extending parallel to the sides to which the limbs 9 are connected, that is, parallel to the diameter of the socket 1. The block 4 acts as a boss for a pinion 11 by securely receiving the drive shaft 12 of the pinion 11 through the bore 10. The pinion 11 has bevelled gear teeth 1 3 and is disposed adjacent the upper part of the block 4 so that its teeth are meshed with the teeth 8 on the upper rim of the socket 1.
Rotation of the shaft 12 will thus drive the pinion 11 to rotate the socket 1 about its axis which is perpendicular to the shaft 12.
The shaft 1 2 may be connected to a shaft that is adapted to be rotated by hand, or to an electric or pneumatically driven shaft. It will be appreciated that in order to use the tool, for example, to move a nut along a vertical screw threaded bolt or spindle it is necessary merely to have sufficient space at right angles to the bolt to contain the width of the tool. In contrast, a normal torque spanner requires an appreciable amount of turning space in a plane at right angles tithe bolt, and, in the case of a fixed socket spanner, it is necessary to have considerable space in an axial direction to the bolt and the amount of movement that can be affected by such a socket spanner is limited by the depth of the socket.
In other embodiments of the present invention the tool may include means for clamping the nutreceiving socket to a nut to prevent it slipping from the nut. In addition, the tool may be arranged to be removably fitted to a drive shaft so that the appropriately sized tool may be chosen and fitted to the drive shaft in accordance with the size of nut to which it is to be applied.

a support member on which the receiving member is rotatably mounted;
a gear wheel mounted for rotation about an axis at an angle to that of the axis of rotation of the receiving member, the teeth of the gear wheel meshing with the gear teeth on the receiving member so that the receiving member may be rotated by rotating the gear wheel.

SPECIFICATION Tool for rotating a nut or bolt head This invention relates to tools for tightening or loosening nuts or bolts through the rotation of the nut or bolt. The invention may find particular application in hand manipulated tools, for example to provide a tool for tightening nuts in certain parts of machinery where access is limited. The invention has arisen in response to the need for a type of spanner that can be used to tighten nuts or rotate bolts where there is – insufficient space for a normal torque spanner to be moved. According to the present invention there is provided. a tool for rotating a nut or bolt head, the tool comprising a receiving member for receiving a nut or bolt head and having a curved surface that is shaped to engage the angle outer surface of a nut or bolt to which the tool is applied, the receiving member including circularly disposed gear teeth. a support member on which the receiving member is mounted for rotation about its axis a gear wheel mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis and so that its axis of rotation is not co-axiai with the axis of rotation of the receiving member, the teeth of the gear wheel meshing with the gear teeth on the receiving member so that the receiving member may be rotated by rotating the gear wheel. The receiving member may comprise an annular member mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis, and the gear teeth may be disposed on one rim thereof. The axis of rotation of the receiving member may be perpendicular to that of the gear wheel so that the receiving member may be rotated by rotating the gear wheel in a perpendicular plane. Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an axial sectional view of a tool for rotating a nut along a screw thread. The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the Figure is for use in tightening or loosening hexagonal nuts. The tool includes an annular nut receiving socket 1 open at both ends. The socket 1 has a cut away channel 2 in its outer cylindrical surface, which channel is co-axial with the socket 1 and rectangular in cross-section. The channel 2 receives loosely a bearing ring 3 on which the socket 1 is mounted for rotation about its axis. The bearing ring 3 comprises a strip of metal bent to form the major part of a ring, and with its two end portions not meetirig but turned outwardly from the ring to provide two parallel support limbs 9. The ring 3, however, encircles the major part of the socket 1 and is sufficiently closely disposed around the socket to prevent the removal of socket 1 from it. The block 4 is rectangular in its lower region, while in its upper region the two side surfaces to which the limbs 9 are secured are curved and are continuous at the top of the block. The block 4 has a bore 10 extending parallel to the sides to which the limbs 9 are connected, that is, parallel to the diameter of the socket 1. The block 4 acts as a boss for a pinion 11 by securely receiving the drive shaft 12 of the pinion 11 through the bore 10. The pinion 11 has bevelled gear teeth 1 3 and is disposed adjacent the upper part of the block 4 so that its teeth are meshed with the teeth 8 on the upper rim of the socket 1. Rotation of the shaft 12 will thus drive the pinion 11 to rotate the socket 1 about its axis which is perpendicular to the shaft 12. The shaft 1 2 may be connected to a shaft that is adapted to be rotated by hand, or to an electric or pneumatically driven shaft. It will be appreciated that in order to use the tool, for example, to move a nut along a vertical screw threaded bolt or spindle it is necessary merely to have sufficient space at right angles to the bolt to contain the width of the tool. In contrast, a normal torque spanner requires an appreciable amount of turning space in a plane at right angles tithe bolt, and, in the case of a fixed socket spanner, it is necessary to have considerable space in an axial direction to the bolt and the amount of movement that can be affected by such a socket spanner is limited by the depth of the socket. In other embodiments of the present invention the tool may include means for clamping the nutreceiving socket to a nut to prevent it slipping from the nut. In addition, the tool may be arranged to be removably fitted to a drive shaft so that the appropriately sized tool may be chosen and fitted to the drive shaft in accordance with the size of nut to which it is to be applied. CLAIMS
1. A tool for rotating a nut or bolt head, the tool comprising a receiving member for receiving a nut or bolt head, the receiving member having a concave surface shaped to engage the angled outer surface of a nut or bolt to which the tool is applied and a series of circularly disposed gear teeth;
a support member on which the receiving member is rotatably mounted;
a gear wheel mounted for rotation about an axis at an angle to that of the axis of rotation of the receiving member, the teeth of the gear wheel meshing with the gear teeth on the receiving member so that the receiving member may be rotated by rotating the gear wheel.
2. A tool as claimed in claim 1 wherein the receiving member is annular and mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis.
3. A tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the gear teeth on the receiving member are disposed along one rim of the receiving member.
4. A tool as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the axis of rotating of the receiving member is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the gear wheel.
5. A tool for rotating a nut or bolt head substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawing.
