Abstract
A billiard table has pocket buffers (22) secured to an upper frame (21) surrounding the playing surface, each pocket buffer (22) being located in a cut out (25) in the frame (21), which itself has a longitudinally extending recess (26) which serves to locate cushion strips (18, 19) and each pocket buffer (22) has outwardly extending formations (28) engaging in end portions of the recess (26) adjacent each cut out (25) and overlaid and retained by end portions adjacent cushion strips (18, 19).
Description
SPECIFICATION
Billiard table
This invention relates to a billiard table, which can be used for playing billiards, snooker, pool and similar games, of the type (hereinafter referred to as «of the type described») wherein pocket buffers are secured to an upper frame surrounding the playing surface. The table can be a combined billiard and dining table.
In a known table of this type, pocket buffers (usually moulded from rubber, or plastics or similar material) are placed in a cut-out in the frame and are often secured by fasteners driven through the buffers into the frame. This has the unfortunate effect that balls contacting the buffers can encounter the heads of the fasteners and become damaged. An object of the present invention is to provide a billiard table wherein the above effect can be obviated or minimised.
Accordingly the invention provides a billiard table of the type described, wherein the pocket buffers are each located in a cut-out in the frame, which itself has a longitudinally extending recess which serves to locate cushion strips and each pocket buffer has outwardly extending formations engaging in end portions of the recess adjacent each cut out and overlaid and retained by end portions of adjacent cushion strip.
The recess can be a single groove or a rebate, or a combination of a number of grooves and/or rebates.
The cushion strip can have a body provided with a rearwardly extending tongue engaging the recess, end portions of the tongue being cut away so that the body of the cushion strip at each end overlies one of the formations on the cushion buffer.
Preferably the cushion strips are located by means of the recess and secured by fasteners so as to be detachable for renewal or replacement.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred billiard table of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a middle pocket arrangement of the table of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pocket arrangement of Fig. 2 partly assembled;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the assembly of Figs. 2 and 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a corner pocket of the table of Fig. 1.
A preferred billiard table 10 ofthe invention has six pocket arrangements 11,12,13,14,15, 16 conventionally arranged around a playing surface 17.
Between each pair of pocket arrangements extends a cushion strip such as 18 19 and 20. Each pocket arrangement comprises a buffer of rubber or similar material arranged to engage a cut-out in a surrounding frame 21.
Each centre pocket arrangement such as 11, comprises a rubber buffer 22 having (see Figs. 2 to 5) an upper lip 23, and a lower rib 24 which respectively engage the upper and lower surfaces of the frame 21 around the periphery of a cut-out 25. The inside edge of the frame 21 has a recess in the form of a groove 26 and each length of cushion strip, such as 18 and 19, has a tongue 27 which can be received in the groove and secured by screws (not shown) passing from the underside of the frame 21. This renders them readily removable for repair or replacement.
For securing the buffer 22 to the frame 21 outwardly extending formations in the form of lugs 28 are provided which engage in adjacent end portions of the groove 26, a fastener such as a nail being driven through each lug 28 into the frame 21. The lugs 28 are overlaid by end portions of the cushion strips 18, 19 and are thereby concealed and retained in the groove 26.
As will be seen from Fig. and Fig. each corner pocket arrangement, such as 16, is similar to the middle pocket arrangement 11, lugs 29 engaging adjacent portions of the continuing groove 26 and being overlaid by end portions of cushion strips 19 and 20 (not shown in Fig. 5).
The invention is not limited to the precise details of the foregoing and variations can be made within the scope of the following claims. For example, the recess can be a rebate along the lower internal edge of the frame, our a combination of one or more grooves and/or rebates.
1. A billiard table of the type described, wherein the pocket buffers are each located in a cut-out in the frame, which itself has a longitudinally extending recess which serves to locate cushion strips and each pocket buffer has outwardly extending formations engaging in end portions of the recess adjacent each cut out and overlaid and retained by end portions of adjacent cushion strip.
2. A billiard table as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recess is a groove.
3. A billiard table as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recess is a groove.
4. A billiard table as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recess comprises one or more grooves and/or rebates.
5. A billiard table as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the cushion strips between the pockets have extending therealong a projection or projections complementary to the recess.
6. A billiard table as claimed in claim 5, wherein the projection or projections on each cushion strip terminate short of the end of the cushion strip to accommodate the formations on the pocket buffers.
7. A billiard table as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the frame is separate from and detachably secured to other structure of a body of the table.
8. A billiard table as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a fastener passes through each formation and into the frame.

SPECIFICATION Billiard table This invention relates to a billiard table, which can be used for playing billiards, snooker, pool and similar games, of the type (hereinafter referred to as «of the type described») wherein pocket buffers are secured to an upper frame surrounding the playing surface. The table can be a combined billiard and dining table. In a known table of this type, pocket buffers (usually moulded from rubber, or plastics or similar material) are placed in a cut-out in the frame and are often secured by fasteners driven through the buffers into the frame. This has the unfortunate effect that balls contacting the buffers can encounter the heads of the fasteners and become damaged. An object of the present invention is to provide a billiard table wherein the above effect can be obviated or minimised. Accordingly the invention provides a billiard table of the type described, wherein the pocket buffers are each located in a cut-out in the frame, which itself has a longitudinally extending recess which serves to locate cushion strips and each pocket buffer has outwardly extending formations engaging in end portions of the recess adjacent each cut out and overlaid and retained by end portions of adjacent cushion strip. The recess can be a single groove or a rebate, or a combination of a number of grooves and/or rebates. The cushion strip can have a body provided with a rearwardly extending tongue engaging the recess, end portions of the tongue being cut away so that the body of the cushion strip at each end overlies one of the formations on the cushion buffer. Preferably the cushion strips are located by means of the recess and secured by fasteners so as to be detachable for renewal or replacement. The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred billiard table of the present invention; Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a middle pocket arrangement of the table of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pocket arrangement of Fig. 2 partly assembled; Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the assembly of Figs. 2 and 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a corner pocket of the table of Fig. 1. A preferred billiard table 10 ofthe invention has six pocket arrangements 11,12,13,14,15, 16 conventionally arranged around a playing surface 17. Between each pair of pocket arrangements extends a cushion strip such as 18 19 and 20. For securing the buffer 22 to the frame 21 outwardly extending formations in the form of lugs 28 are provided which engage in adjacent end portions of the groove 26, a fastener such as a nail being driven through each lug 28 into the frame 21. The lugs 28 are overlaid by end portions of the cushion strips 18, 19 and are thereby concealed and retained in the groove 26. As will be seen from Fig. and Fig. each corner pocket arrangement, such as 16, is similar to the middle pocket arrangement 11, lugs 29 engaging adjacent portions of the continuing groove 26 and being overlaid by end portions of cushion strips 19 and 20 (not shown in Fig. 5). 1. A billiard table of the type described, wherein the pocket buffers are each located in a cut-out in the frame, which itself has a longitudinally extending recess which serves to locate cushion strips and each pocket buffer has outwardly extending formations engaging in end portions of the recess adjacent each cut out and overlaid and retained by end portions of adjacent cushion strip.

6. A billiard table as claimed in claim 5, wherein the projection or projections on each cushion strip terminate short of the end of the cushion strip to accommodate the formations on the pocket buffers.
7. A billiard table as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the frame is separate from and detachably secured to other structure of a body of the table.
8. A billiard table as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a fastener passes through each formation and into the frame.
