Abstract
A pair of briefs comprising a front panel 5, and a rear panel 16 spaced apart by a crotch panel 17 which has opposed edges secured to the front and rear panels, the front and rear panels each having an upper edge which together surround the waist opening of the briefs, the front and rear panels each having a lower edge, the rear panel being secured along its lower edge to one of said opposed edges of the crotch panel, the other of said opposed edges of the crotch panel being secured to a lower region of the front panel, and a hydrophilic layer which is co-extensive with the crotch panel and which is secured to said opposed edges of the crotch panel.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Briefs
The present invention relates to briefs, in particular briefs for men.
According to the present invention there is provided a pair of briefs comprising a front panel, and a rear panel spaced apart by a crotch panel which has opposed edges secured to the front and rear panels, the front and rear panels each having an upper edge which together surround the waist opening of the briefs, the front and rear panels each having a lower edge, the rear panel being secured along its lower edge to one of said opposed edges of the crotch panel, the other of said opposed edges of the crotch panel being secured to a lower region of the front panel, and a hydrophylic layer which is co-extensive with the crotch panel and which is secured to said opposed edges of the crotch panel.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure lisa perspective view of a first embodiment according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment according to the present invention.
Referring initially to Figure 1, a pair of mens briefs is generally shown at 10 and includes a waist opening 11, and two leg openings 12 and 13.
The briefs 10 basically is made up from three separate pieces of fabric namely, a front panel 15, a rear panel 16 and a crotch panel 17. Each panel is pre-shaped before make up by a cutting operation and each is made from a fabric knitted using a synthetic yarn e.g. a polyamide.
The front panel 15 is connected to the crotch panel at a seam 20 formed by overlock stitching and the rear panel is connected to the crotch panel at a seam 21 also by overlock stitching.
Prior to forming seams 20,21 a layer of fabric 22 made of an absorbent material, e.g. a knitted cotten fabric, is laid over the crotch panel 17 and is so sized to be co-extensive with the crotch panel 17 and is secured in position at opposite ends by virture of seams 20, 21.
The front and rear panels are connected to one another by virtue of seams 25 and 26 which are formed by overlock stitching.
Prior to forming seams 25 and 26, edging strips 27 and 28 are stitched onto the edges of the panels which are to define leg openings 12 and 13 respectively. These strips also serve to secure the sides of the fabric layer 22 to the crotch panel 17.
Seam 25 is then formed and then a waist band 29
is attached by sewing to the upper edges of the front
and rear panels prior to forming seam 26 which then
completes the garment.
In Figure 2 another pair of briefs 40 is illustrated.
The briefs 40 are of the type generally known a ‘y’
front briefs. Again briefs 40 is basically made up
from three pieces of fabric and accordingly parts similar to those in Figure 1 have been denoted by the
same reference numerals.
The make up operation is basically the same as that for the briefs 10 illustrated in Figure 1 in that the front, crotch and rear panels are secured to one another prior to attaching the leg opening edging strips 27, 28; forming one of the seams 25 or 26 and then attaching waist band 29 and then finally forming the other of the seams 25 or 26.
The main difference in make up resides in the way the front panel 15 is secured to the crotch panel 17 in order to form a ‘y’ front. Accordingly, upper edge portion 17a of the crotch panel 17 is attached to part of the front panel -15 so that the crotch panel 17 overlaps the lower portion 15a of the front panel.
The edge portion 17a is secured to the panel 15 by virtue of a reinforcing strip 42 which extends from leg opening 13 to the waist band 29.
The remaining upper edge portion 17b of the panel 17 is provided with an edging strip 43. The edge portion 17b is attached to panel 15 only at a location adjacent the leg opening 12 by virtue of edging strip 27 thereby defining an opening. As before the absorbent layer 22 is co-extensive with panel 17 and is thereby attached at its upper end to panel 17 by virtue of edging strip 43 and reinforcing strip 42.
The lower edge of the front panel 15 is provided with an edging strip 15b.
The major advantage provided by the present invention is that it provides an absorbent layer at the crotch of mens briefs which are made of a nonabsorbent material.
1. A pair of briefs comprising a front panel, and a rear panel spaced apart by a crotch panel which has opposed edges secured to the front and rear panels, the front and rear panels each having an upper edge which together surround the waist opening of the briefs, the front and rear panels each having a lower edge, the rear panel being secured along its lower edge to one of said opposed edges of the crotch panel, the other of said opposed edges of the crotch panel being secured to a lower region of the front panel, and a hydrophylic layer which is co-extensive with the crotch panel and which is secured to said opposed edges of the crotch panel.
2. A pair of briefs according to Claim 1 wherein said other of said opposed edges of the crotch panel
is secured to the lower edge of the front panel.
3. A pair of briefs according to Claim 1 wherein a
portion of said other of said opposed edges of the
crotch panel is secured to the lower region of the front panel so as to define a ‘y’ front type of briefs.
4. A pair of briefs according to any preceding
Claim wherein adjacent side edges of the front, rear
and crotch panels define a leg opening, an edging
strip being secured to said edges so as to surround the leg opening, the securance of the edging strip
also serving to secure the side edges of the hyd
rophylic layer to the side edges of the crotch panel.
5. A pair of briefs according to any preceding
Claim wherein securance of the panels to one
another is by stitching.
6. A pair of briefs according to any preceding
Claim wherein the hydrophylic layer comprises a
fabric knitted from a hydrophylic yarn such as
