SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and Relating to Compression Moulding
Technical Field of the Invention
This invention relates to apparatus for feeding a prechosen charge of a moulding composition to a compression moulding press for subsequent moulding into a shaped article.
The Prior Art
It has been common practice for many years to feed compression moulding presses substantially automatically, by means of apparatus which (a) meters out prechosen charges of moulding composition and (b) transfers the metered charges to the individual cavities («impressions») in a moulding tool. One example of such apparatus is described in the Specification of U.K. patent No. 736551. The apparatus described incorporates means for slightly adjusting the charge fed to individual impressions of a press, but does not provide for any overall adjustment of charge. Accordingly, a modified apparatus is frequently used, in which the metered charges are adjustable overall, but not individually. This apparatus consists of a pair of spaced-apart plates having a plurality of apertures therein to correspond to the number of impressions in the moulding tool. Each aperture of one plate communicates with the corresponding aperture of the other plate through a tube which is in two parts disposed in telescopic relationship, so that the volume of the tube can be adjusted by varying the spacing between the two plates. This provides an overall adjustment, but does not provide for any individual adjustment. It is an object of the invention to overcome this disadvantage.
Brief Description of the Invention
According to the present invention apparatus for feeding charges of moulding composition to a compression moulding press includes a pair of spaced-apart plates each having a plurality of apertures therein to correspond to the number of impressions in the moulding tool, each aperture of one plate communicating with the corresponding aperture of the other plate through a tube which is in two telescopically disposed parts, whereby varying the spacing between the plates varies the volume of the tube, together with an insert member for said tube engageable with one tube part and movable relative to the other tube part so as to define an adjustable blind volume. «Blind volume» means a volume within the tube which is not accessible to the moulding composition. Because the blind volume is adjustable it effectively provides a means of adjusting the volume of an individual tube and hence of the charge of moulding composition which is metered out by the tube.
The insert member is preferably in the form of a tubular sleeve, the blind volume being defined between the insert and at least one of the tube parts. A particularly preferred form of insert is an externally screw threaded sleeve engageable in a complementary screw threaded portion of that one of the tube parts which has the smaller diameter, i.e. that tube part which slides inside the other tube part. The blind volume is then conveniently defined between an annular external flange on the insert and the end of the tube part inside which the insert is engaged.
Description of a Preferred Embodiment
In order that the invention be better understood it will be described in more detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole figure is a partly cross-sectional side view through part of an apparatus for feeding moulding composition to a compression moulding press. For convenience, only a single unit is shown and described, although it will be appreciated that there will normally be several such units, one for each impression of the moulding tool and the associated shutter plate being common to all of the units.
In the figure, a pair of generally square plates
1, 2 are spaced apart by bolts 3 and associated nuts, 4. Four such bolts are provided, although only two appear in the figure. The plates have aligned apertures 5, 6 in them and mounted in these apertures are tubes 7, and 8 respectively, which overlap in telescoped relationship, so that adjusting the spacing between the plates 1 and 2, by appropriate adjustment of the nuts 4, varies the volume defined within the overlapped tube parts between the two plates. The smaller diameter tube, 8, is internally screw-threaded over part of its length from its free end 9 towards the captive end 10 which is received in the plate
2. A tubular insert 11, having a complementary screw threaded portion 12 extending from an annular external flange 13 is screwed into the smaller diameter tube part. The external diameter of the flange is a sliding fit in the other, larger diameter tube part 7, so that there is an annular gap between the free end 9 and the facing surface 14 of the flange. This width of this gap in a radial direction is fixed, but its depth axially of the tube is a variable quantity which depends on the extent to which the insert is screwed into the tube part 7. The volume of the gap is a blind volume, since it is not accessible to moulding composition supplied to the tube. To facilitate adjustment of the blind volume, the insert is provided with an axially-extending slot 15 so that a simple hand tool having a radially directed spigot can be used to turn the insert, to vary the blind volume as desired. To prevent inadvertent rotation, for example whilst in use, the insert is preferably a tight, interference fit in the associated tube part. This may be accomplished by simply deforming a part of the insert, or by the use of proprietary chemical locking agents. The end of the insert remote from the flange is provided with an internal chamfer 16. The unit is slidably supported on a shutter plate 17, which in the position shown prevents a charge of moulding composition falling

through the tubes. In use, the apparatus is loaded with moulding composition through the plate 2, the chamfer 16 facilitating the entry and subsequent discharge through the piate 1 of 5 the material through the shutter plate into one impression of a moulding tool. One such unit is provided for each impression of the associtaed moulding tool, the apparatus and method overall being similar to that described in 10 the aforesaid Specification No. 736551. Firstly, the insert is set to an intermediate position and then the separation between the two plates is , adjusted to provide the correct «shot» weight for the product to be moulded. In theory, of course, 15 this adjustment once made is perfectly satisfactory, because each impression of a given tool is intended to be identical. However, in practice small variations are often appear, apparent either as moulding flaws due to 20 insufficient material being fed to a particular impression, or a «flash» caused by excessive material. Once the relevant impression has been identified by a trial moulding operation, it is a simple matter to increase or reduce the volume of 25 the tube by varying the blind volume. This can be done for as many of the tubes as is appropriate, without altering the volume of all of the tubes.

Claims

1. Apparatus for feeding charges of moulding 30 composition to a compression moulding press including a pair of spaced-apart plates each having a plurality of apertures therein to correspond to the number of impressions in the moulding tool, each aperture of one plate 35 communicating with the the corresponding aperture of the other plate through a tube which is in two telescopically disposed parts, whereby varying the spacing between the plates varies the volume of the tube, together with an insert 40 member for said tube engageable with one tube part and movable relative to the other tube part so as to define an adjustable blind volume (as hereinbefore defined).

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the 45 insert member is in the form of a tubular sleeve,
said blind volume being defined between the sleeve and at least one of the tube parts.

3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the insert member is an externally screw threaded
50 sleeve having an externally screw threaded sleeve having an annular flange at one end and engageable in a complementary screw threaded portion of that one of the tube parts which has the smaller diameter so that said blind volume if 55 defined between said flange and one end of the tube part inside which the insert is engaged.
